A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
The beginning of the new financial year has seen the further expansion of the Barwon Region's kerbside recycling service. As of the 1st of July 2006 all member councils have implemented the full mixed plastic container codes (1 - 7) within their recycling collection services. The expanded service has been accompanied by an education campaign through local media outlets.

These changes further increase our capacity to divert waste from landfill and reflect the Barwon Regions progressive approach to waste management.

NEWS FROM THE EXECUTIVE
OFFICER

The region has welcomed mattress recycling to the Barwon region with DreamSafe mattress recyclers commencing operations in Geelong on 7th August 2006 with a recycling facility located at 29b Grandview Parade Moolap.

DreamSafe will be involved in cleaning and sanitising mattresses for reuse by charities as well as providing an outlet for retailers to recycling mattresses. The mattresses are stripped of steel, timber and foam and all of these components are recycled.

The Company is offering to collect mattresses from households for $25 for the first mattress and $15 for each additional mattress, alternatively mattresses can be dropped off at the facility for a drop off fee of $15.00 each. DreamSafe number is 1300 551 245 for enquiries.

Triple Bin Challenge
Geelong primary students will be the first in Victoria to take part in a new environmental initiative launched jointly by Clean Up Australia, Alcoa Foundation and Barwon Regional Waste Management Group aimed at helping manage waste in schools.

Clean Up Australia Chairman Ian Kiernan AO and Geelong MP Ian Trezise unveiled the new initiative known as the Triple Bin Challenge at Tate Street Primary School in Geelong on the 12th July.

The Triple Bin Challenge teaches children to sort rubbish with colour-coded bins encouraging students to recycle. About 20 schools in the Geelong region are expected to take part in the Triple Bin Challenge.

Mr Kiernan said the Triple Bin Challenge was an important new approach as it built on what Clean Up Australia did with the annual Clean Up Schools Day and also educated children on how to manage rubbish all year round. “Teaching children that there is value in rubbish is the challenge but it can be done and the Triple Bin Challenge makes recycling cool,” Mr Kiernan said.

Alcoa Environment Health and Safety Eastern Operations Manager Gerard Kennedy said the Alcoa Foundation was proud to be supporting this initiative which was first piloted by Alcoa’s Anglesea site and the Anglesea Primary School.

Waste Wise Geelong Network
The Waste Wise Geelong Network continues to grow, with 82 members, 22 of which are Waste Wise Certified and 17 of which have committed to the Waste Wise program.

Alcoa of Australia hosted the Waste Wise Geelong Network breakfast on Wednesday 12 July 2006 at the Geelong Conference Centre.  Alcoa is a member of the Waste Wise Geelong Network and a Waste Wise Certified company through Sustainability Victoria. Barry Knight, Environment and Occupational Hygiene Consultant, Alcoa Anglesea Power Station, provided an overview of Alcoa Anglesea's Waste Reduction Strategy and how it has resulted in a 65% reduction in waste to landfill since 2000.

Mr Knight explained that Alcoa Anglesea's Waste Reduction Strategy is part of a much broader environmental management plan implemented across the site that addresses the site's impact on land, air, water, waste and community.

The guest speaker was Ian Kiernan, AO who is well known for his initiatives through Clean Up Australia. Mr Kiernan explained to the guests at the Waste Wise Geelong Network breakfast that "although we’re pretty good at reducing the waste we produce at home, when it comes to our workplace, 60% of us say we want to do more but only 11% actually do anything".  Mr Kiernan shared tips and strategies on how small-to-medium-enterprises (SMEs) can reduce waste and improve their bottom line at the same time.

GreenShop Project
The Greenshop program, a free community change program that is being supported by Barwon Regional Waste Management Group, has been conducted at the Anglesea IGA in June and July of this year.

The Program aims to measure the impact of green marketing strategies by linking the three P’s: People Planet Profit. These indicators can be easily promoted to customers, are beneficial to the environment and profitable for the business.

The Program promotes environmentally friendly shopping behaviors which include the following:

Green Clean- Promoting the use of green cleaning methods, including the use of mitts which don’t require chemicals, or natural or chemical free cleaners.

Back again...Buy to Recycle- Promoting both recycling and the purchase of goods made from recycled materials.

Make it Last- Promoting the purchase and use of products which are; durable rather than disposable; or can be fixed rather than thrown away.

BYO Bag- Encouraging the use of reusable bags (the Anglesea IGA has been a plastic bag free supermarket since August 2005).

Healthcare Network
The Barwon Waste Wise Healthcare Network began in 2001 and resulted from a workshop held with this sector in February of that year. The network provides organisations in this sector, including hospitals, community health centres, pathology services, aged care facilities etc with a forum to share information, knowledge and skills with other environmentally committed organisations. The advantages of participating in the network and becoming Waste Wise extend above and beyond reducing waste in the workplace. It may result in financial savings, increase staff morale and enthusiasm, provide opportunities for networking and the development of strategic partnerships, assist in triple bottom line reporting, reduce the volume of waste going to landfill and publicly demonstrates to the  community a commitment to the environment. Currently Colac Area Health and Bellarine Community Health - Pt Lonsdale site are Waste Wise certified.
