Detox Ur Home
The Detox Ur Home Final Report has been completed- reporting on a successful six month pilot project established to document the financial and logistical requirements of providing a permanent drop off facility for the collection of a range of low toxic-high volume household waste products at the Geelong Resource Recovery Facility located at Duoro Street, North Geelong.

Key findings of the report are as follows:
- The amount of household toxic materials collected during the pilot was in excess of 100,000kgs.
- User surveys confirm that a significant amount of this material would have ended up in landfill if the facility had not been in operation.
- The project found that a significant majority of the waste products collected were of use to industry.
- The project provides a model that is transferable and will be useful for other regions and partnerships in establishing similar facilities.

Barwon Regional Waste Survey
The Barwon Regional Waste Survey has been completed for 2004-2005. This report enables the BRWMG to identify and quantify materials going to landfill and recyclable materials collected in the Barwon region for the financial year 2004-2005.

The survey found the following:
Total waste deposited into landfill = 395,170 tonnes
Total recyclables collected = 220,732 tonnes

Of the total volume of waste going into landfill the following items were the most significant:

  • Clean fill- 134,708 tonnes (34%)
  • Industrial waste-81,565 tonnes (21%)
  • Municipal waste (excluding kerbside waste)- 29,720 tonnes (7.5%)
  • Municipal waste (kerbside)- 43,467 tonnes (11%)
  • Contaminated soil-54,400 tonnes (14%)
  • Mixed Rubble-14,107 tonnes (4%)

Of the total volume of recyclable materials being collected the following items were the most significant:

  • Soil & Rubble- 125,138 tonnes (57%)
  • Mixed Recyclables-46,092 tonnes (21%)
  • Green waste-38,358 tonnes (17%)

Comparisons were able to be made with the waste survey produced in the 2002-2003 financial year that showed:

  • Land filled material up 20% from 2002-2003
  • Recycled material up 500% from 2002-2003
  • Average quantity of kerbside waste produced by each household in the region down 37% from 2002-2003

The historical data shows the following downward trend in the average quantity of waste produced per household per year in the Barwon Region:

  • 2001-2002- 664kg per household
  • 2002-2003- 550kg per household
  • 2004-2005- 345kg per household

Donated Goods Trial
The final report including cost benefit analysis has been completed for the Donated Goods Kerbside Trial that was conducted in the City of Greater Geelong last year. The trial ran for four months, during which participating residents could place donated goods contained in a dedicated bag in their recycling bin, the bag then went to the VISY Recycling materials recovery facility where it was separated from the other recyclables and sent to FM Recycling who sorted and distributed the material to charity groups in Geelong on request.

Key findings of the report are as follows:
• A total of 14.35 tonnes of material was collected.
• The cost benefit analysis of the trial shows the kerbside collection service when compared to the existing charity bin collection system yields a 29% reduction in cost per tonne of quality material.
• There were some issues raised by the local charities about the contamination of material and the impact on material being donated directly to the charity shops.
• The trial indicated that a kerbside collection service would have no impact on quantities of material being donated directly to the charity shops.
• The City of Greater Geelong considers the results of the trial as most encouraging and supports the further investigation of a service being provided across the municipality.
• The donated goods working group will continue to be facilitated by the City of Greater Geelong to directly involved the local charity groups in any decision making processes that occur.

Waste Wise Schools Network
The Schools Network met on the 17th of May- the aim of this network is to provide an opportunity for teachers to share experiences, have access to education officers from various agencies, find out information from experts in the field and participate in tours of other schools and facilities.

The meeting was an opportunity for teachers to share successes, and discuss challenges, solutions and opportunities. The group reviewed the Waste Wise Schools booklet (the booklet has been developed to help schools become Waste Wise certified), and the two new programs that have been developed for the education centre.

The network continues to be a valuable forum for teachers to share ideas, and for the co-ordination of resource development and Waste Wise strategies.
