A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
Residents in the Barwon Region will soon have access to a Byteback electronic waste recycling collection point located at the Duoro Street Resource Recovery Centre. Byteback is a free service, available to residents and small business owners in Victoria who want to dispose of unwanted, old and unused computers in a safe and environmentally responsible way.

Minister Thwaites launched the project on the 6th September at Duoro Street, committing funds to the project that is expected to be operational in early 2007.

NEWS FROM THE EXECUTIVE
OFFICER
The Group recently held a mattress stewardship forum for traders and manufacturers to offer a take back service for mattresses for recycling rather than sending mattresses to landfill. The forum was well attended and was positively received by the regions mattress traders and manufacturers.

The Group will develop a trader kit and seek their formal commitment prior to implementation of the program.

The Group believes this project could lead to product responsibility from manufacturers and is a model that can be reproduced throughout Australia.

Aireys Inlet Plastic Bag Free Campaign
The Aireys Inlet Plastic Bag Free Campaign was launched on the 11th of September at the Aireys Inlet Farmers Market.

Over 90% of the Aireys Inlet Traders have made a commitment to eliminate plastic shopping bags from their stores and encourage customers to use alternative such as reusable shopping bags. The community reception to the campaign has also been very positive.

Bob's Shop (The Duoro St Recycle Shop)
Bob Hayes grew up helping out at his mother’s second-hand dealership and you could say he’s developed an eye for collectable's and an ability to see for what they could be rather than what they once were.

He came to the Geelong Resource Recovery Centre 11 years ago; at which time the recycle shop took the form of a small 6ft shed corner filled with books. Bob immediately saw an opportunity to take advantage of the reusable materials that were being deposited at the Transfer Station. Slowly and steadily he has expanded the recycle shop into the centre it is today.

Waste Wisdom Events Workshop
This workshop was an opportunity for event organisers waste contractors and council offices to find out more about the Waste Wise events program.

Buzz Thompson organiser of the annual Rock above the Falls Festival shared his experiences with the Waste WIse events program- and some of the innovative ideas and practices he has implemented.

Steve Harwood from VISY Recycling took us on a virtual tour of the Materials Recovery Facility and gave us an insight into what this means for the collection of recyclable at events.

We discussed practical problems and how to solve them and took time to brainstorm how the number of Waste Wise Events can be expanded in our Region.

Composting Workshops
The BRWMG has enlisted the expertise of the Geelong Organic Gardeners to run a serious of composting workshops at events across the Region. THe first of these was run at the Surf Coast Living Green Event and was extremely successful. The participants watched riveted to every word as Steve Findlay and Liz Raimondo from GOG ran through the does and don't's of composting with a practical display of how to set up a bin.

Waste Wise Geelong Network
We have been successful in gaining funding for the Waste Wise Geelong Network through Sustainability Victoria. This means we can have a dedicated project manager to continue developing the Network and assisting Network members in becoming Waste Wise certified. Applications for the project manager position closed on the 6th of October and the successful applicant will be announced in November.
