A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
Litter and illegal dumping have been identified as significant issues in the Barwon Region. A consultation for the State Litter Strategy was held by Sustainability Victoria in Geelong in late March, and provided key stakeholders with the opportunity to comment on the strategy. Major issues raised at this forum include:
- the introduction of extended producer responsibility for priority littered items,
- A Statewide consistent messaging/branding of litter campaigns and a coordinated and consistent approach to the enforcement of the Environmental Protection Act in regards to litter,
-State level engagement with all land owners to play an active role in the local delivery of litter prevention campaigns/activities and the ongoing management/collection of litter.

NEWS FROM THE EXECUTIVE
OFFICER
With the Corio landfill site closing in 2009, the Group has commenced a process to plan for the future management of solid waste materials within the region. It has agreement to act as agent for the City of Greater Geelong, the Shire of Surf Coast, the Shire of Colac Otway, the Borough of Queenscliffe and the Shire of Golden Plains to determine a strategic framework for the future and arrange the necessary contracts.

The Group has an opportunity to encourage material efficiency and resource recovery solutions to be established in the region which will meet the Victorian State ‘Towards Zero Waste’ reduction targets. The review will include the materials collected at kerbside from residential properties (ie: recyclables, green waste, food organics) and other mixed waste from some 140,000 rateable properties with a typical mix of residential, commercial, light and heavy industry and rural properties. Annually some 237,000 tonnes of material is potentially available for reuse or processing and recovery within the region.

The expression of interest close on Friday 22 June 2007.

CleanSite Builders Forum
A Clean Site forum was held in the Barwon region on the 12th April. The forum provided an opportunity for the construction and demolition industry to gain information on the new OH&S guidelines- specifically in relation to asbestos handling, the Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria Clean Site program, and our Councils local laws and their application to building sites.

A local builder presented his experiences in litter prevention, waste reduction and recycling of building waste- an open discussion followed, and the participants comments highlighted the need for clearer information and training in best practice site management.

The BRWMG is now in the process of facilitating practical workshops held in partnership with KABV to provide builders with the techniques and information on what a best practice Clean Site looks like and how to set one up.

Anglesea gets Lions Share of
E-Waste
On Saturday 14th April 2007 the Lions Club of Anglesea in partnership with the Surf Coast Shire and the Barwon Regional Waste Management Group, held a E-Waste collection day at the reserve opposite the Anglesea Shopping Centre.

Over a two hour period a 15m3 skip was filled with all manner of old and unwanted household electronic goods. These ranged from toasters to printers, antique transistor radios to televisions.

The filled skip was transported to GDP Industries in North Geelong where all the items were dismantled and recyclable materials salvaged. Find out more

Triple Bin Challenge
The Triple Bin Challenge has come to a close, with schools submitting their final reports at the end of first term.

Congratulations to Bellbrae Primary School for achieving an impressive 20% reduction in waste, a 59% reduction in litter, and introducing a commingled recycling collection at the school- and winning the challenge.

There were a number of outstanding efforts in the Challenge, with schools transforming their waste management programs, introducing recycling collections, and undertaking comprehensive education campaigns targeting students, staff and the broader school community.

The Barwon Regional Waste Management Group would like to thank all the participating Schools for their passion and innovation in implementing waste minimization and recycling practices.

Butt Free Beaches along the Surf Coast
The Surf Coast Shire coordinated a Butt Free Beaches campaign this summer- the project was launched on the 16 March at the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club

The project has focused on major events along the Surf Coast during the busy summer period. The Rip Curl Pro, held at Bells Beach over the Easter weekend, was an ideal event to promote the Butt Free message.

The weekend's activities included over 60 face to face surveys being conducted, Green Corp staff were recruited as mobile billboards and personal ashtray distributors, 1500 personal ashtrays were distributed to smokers, and the "Butt Free" banner was displayed in a prominent location at the main entrance of the event.

Waste Wise Geelong Network
The Waste Wise Geelong Network continues to grow, with 94 members, 29 of which are Waste Wise Certified and 16 of which have committed to the Waste Wise program.

Barwon Water hosted the Waste Wise Geelong Network breakfast on Tuesday 24th April 2007 at the Geelong Conference Centre.  Barwon Water is a member of the Waste Wise Geelong Network and the city offices have achieved Waste Wise Certification with the Water treatment plants currently working through the process. An overview was provided of the strategic water planning program for the region, including the role of business. In hearing about how the offices achieved Waste Wise Certification, the importance of good relationships with all staff involved was highlighted to ensure positive results for implementing a Waste Reduction Action Plan. Finally our members had the opportunity to highlight their needs and contribute ideas for future business related water programs.

Our next Network breakfast sponsored by Adcell Media, will be held on Wednesday 13th June 2007 at the Geelong Conference Centre.

For more information about membership and or Network activities contact Liz Raimondo- Project Manager- WWGN.
