Hot news:Did you know.... Every year household recycling in Victoria saves 8,960 mega litres of water- that’s the average amount of water that 65 thousand people use every year. To find out more about the water and energy saving benefits of recycling check out Sustainability Victoria's Website Total Waste System EOI Update The Expression of Interest for the total waste system has closed. A total of 20 EOI's have been received. These will be assessed and a report submitted to member councils and the Golden Plains Shire in September 2007. Waste Wise Businesses Update Congratulations to the following businesses who have achieved bronze Waste Wise certification: Healthcare Waste Wise Certifications Congratulations to Colac Area Health (Colac Hospital) for achieving silver Waste Wise certification. Colac Area Health have been involved in the Waste Wise program since 2000 and have shown continual improvement and promotion of their Waste Wise program. Barwon Waste Wise Healthcare Network The Barwon Waste Wise Healthcare network meet on the 13th of June. Hesse Rural Health shared their experiences on how the Winchelsea Hospital and Aged Care Facilities have implemented a chemical free cleaning program and their Waste Wise journey so far. Waste Wise Schools Update The Barwon Waste Wise schools network met on the 30th of May. The meeting was hosted by Torquay Primary School. Teachers from across the region toured Torquay PS sustainability initiatives and heard how the programs have been funded and implemented. Participants also found out about actions, successes, problems and solutions undertaken by other schools and the proposed Learning to Live Sustainably Regional Alliance. Waste WIse Events Update The 2006-2007 year has seen a record number of events in the Barwon Region embracing the Waste Wise program. Most recent Waste Wise events include the Dalai Lama Tour at the Geelong Arena, and the National Celtic Festival at Portarlington. To view the complete events list- Click here Geelong Industry Network The Productivity through Resource Efficiency program, managed by the Geelong Manufacturing Council, was launched at Godfrey Hirst Australia by Ian Trezise member for Geelong. CONTACTS ENZO BRUSCELLA EXECUTIVE OFFICER A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR NEWS FROM THE EXECUTIVE The Group noted the appointed Directors for 07-08 as follows: Terms 1 and 2 of 2007 have seen record numbers of students attending the Barwon Waste Wise Education Centre. This increase in student numbers has lead to need for another sessional teacher. We are delighted to welcome Hilary Prideaux to our wonderful team of sessional teachers. Triple Bin Challenge Clean Up Australia Chairman Ian Kiernan AO, who presented the award, said Bellbrae Primary School had implemented educational activities such as displaying posters across the school, displaying rubbish collected on Clean Up Australia Day, promoting lunches being packaged in reusable containers and also making note pads out of single sided used paper. Bellbrae Primary School Principal Mr Stephen McDonald said the students at the school were now very aware of the new recycling program including teachers and parents. “We have regarded the Triple Bin Challenge as a great success in getting us up and running with the sustainable concept and we hope it will take us further to becoming a sustainable school in the future,” Mr McDonald said.
