Waste Wise Tip

Waste Wise Fact

Fact: Every year approximately 1.5 million computers reach the end of their lives in Sydney and Melbourne alone. This equates to more than 50,000 tonnes of computers being stored in garages or disposed of to landfill, instead of being recycled.

Solution: Byteback™ is a free service, available to residents and small business owners in Victoria who want to dispose of unwanted, old and unused computers in a safe and environmentally responsible way.
Byteback is available at the City of Greater Geelong, Geelong Resource Recovery Centre, 100 Douro Street, North Geelong (Melways Ref:  225 K6); open 7 days a week from 7:30am - 4:15pm

MOBILEMUSTER PHONE RECYCLING COMPETITION
- WIN $1000

 

Mobile Muster and Barwon Regional Waste Management Group have joined forces to promote the collection and recycling of old mobile phones in the Barwon Region* during National Recycling Week, 12th - 16th November and your school could win $1000.

 

Simply ask students, teachers and friends to place their old phones in the school's collection box (provided and collected free of charge) during National Recycling Week. 

 

Both the primary and secondary school that collects the most mobile phones per student will win $1000 each. Each school that collects over 100 kilograms will win a bonus prize of $250 each and every participating school will receive a certificate.

 

Businesses are also being invited to participate by either being a collection point themselves or collecting phones and donating them to a participating school.

 

To register simply click here, add your schools details to the form, save it and e-mail it back BY FRIDAY 26th October. (email preferred but the form can be faxed on 5277 9979). You will receive a kit which includes: a collection box, promotional posters and an article for your school newsletter, educational materials and a DVD that explains the recycling process.

ART OF SUSTAINABILITY FESTIVAL
- a lifetime of living and lasting

 

 

The Art of Sustainability Exhibition and Festival being held in Geelong October 22 - 26 2007, is a celebration of student learning of sustainability through art. It includes an exhibition of student work, student workshops (now fully booked) and teacher workshops.

 

FREE teacher workshops and a dinner are being held as a part of the Art of Sustainability Festival.

 

Tuesday 23rd October- Teacher workshop
(Geelong Heritage Centre)

4.30—5.30 pm - Tour of Heritage Centre and talk by Director 5.30 - 6.30 - Walk along the foreshore becoming familiar with the Hunt for Sustainability Trail.

 

Thursday 25th October - presentations, exhibition,
light dinner networking and more...

5pm– 6 pm - ‘Flight Path’ workshop and presentation on Remida Centres at Reggio Emelia, Italy and Perth
6 pm-8pm  - Light dinner and fashion parade with costumes from Wear Artrageous Event, meet local  environment educators and find out how they can assist your  school, view Art of Sustainability exhibition, book display.
 8 pm- 9pm - networking

FIRST SILVER WASTE WISE SCHOOLS CERTIFICATION
IN THE REGION  
 

Oberon South Primary School in Belmont has been awarded Silver Certification through the Waste Wise Schools Program.  The aims are to reduce litter and waste in schools, to reduce associated disposal costs, to create worthwhile learning opportunities for students and to instill environmental awareness and responsibility at an early age.
