Reclaiming our respect for food through “tapping into the best in people”: A feasibility study into food harvesting in the Barwon region
June 2011 - Between March and May 2011, the Barwon Regional Waste Management Group commissioned a food harvesting feasibility study. The purpose of the study was to explore whether food, which is left over in hospitality and food retail sector businesses, could be rescued and donated to clients of local welfare agencies.
Many of these clients are food insecure, so if a system could be developed it would be a means of transferring food wealth and reducing food waste to landfill in the region. The study identified where there is food available to harvest in the Barwon region.
It also established the demand for this food amongst welfare agencies in the region. Finally, we looked at possible business models for food harvesting which considered the logistics, packaging and training requirements of the region.
The study was completed by a sustainability studies graduate, on a work experience basis. read more...
